The stunning lack of logic in the health care debate
It is sad that logic seems totally absent in the health care debate. So much so that the following is presented as both reasonable and desirable:
Insurers no longer could base premiums on a person's medical history, although they still could charge more to 50-year-olds than to people in their 20s.

The reason that unhealthy people pay higher premiums is because...they are unhealthy! If they don't pay higher premiums, then everyone else does.

In the life insurance business, for example, people pay higher premiums if they smoke, are in ill-health (!), skydive, drive a motorcycle, etc. This is because they are a higher risk than people who do not do these things.

So if you want to keep the illusion that in a mandated coverage environment what you are really paying are "insurance premiums" instead of a tax on health care coverage then you have to allow companies to charge accordingly for higher risk customers.

Using logic we see that what is being proposed is not an environment where we pay "insurance" premiums but simply a tax on health care. There is no other way to justify the concept that people in ill-health pay the same as those who are in good health.

Speaking of differences in payments, don't let the "age" loophole fool you. Soon your "insurance premiums" will be based on your income. Just the like the evil rich, who will have to pay higher taxes (um, I mean, "premiums") right out of the gate. That's what you get with socialism: payments not based on use or risk but on class warfare, where "people richer than you" will allegedly pay for your services.

That, however, is also a lie. Because as anyone who has studied the issue knows, you can't pay for massive government programs only by taxing the rich. If the Obama health care scam passes everyone will be paying higher taxes.

(Oh, and for any union thugs reading this, that address is flag@whitehouse.gov!)

obama one big ass mistake America
The future of health "insurance" in a nutshell
This is what I've been able to wrangle out of the text of the proposed bill.

  • Existing plans will be allowed to continue except that they may not enroll new members unless said plans are the equivalent of the government provided plan(s).
  • Various "tests" (e.g., "diversity") will determine when and for how long existing plans will be allowed to exist. Again, unless they mirror government plans expect them to be forced out of existence.
  • You will be paying for things you may not want or need, such as free interpreter services, family planning services, etc.
  • No one has to prove they are a citizen to enroll or that they qualify for subsidized plans. Once in no one can force them to prove they still qualify.
  • Doctors will take a 20% cut in reimbursements the first year and a 10% cut the second year.
  • Maximum "private" profit is 15% over the cost of providing services. And don't expect that to stay at 15%, either.

There's more, but this is enough to demonstrate that the bill is designed in such a way that only the government will be offering health "insurance" after a few years. And since "everything is covered" it is not really insurance but is instead a tax.

And don't think those surtaxes will remain "only on the rich". That's how income taxes started out, too.

Suckers!

Obama's health care scam makes private insurance illegal
That's right. If you currently have it you can keep it...but no one can ever get a new private policy again. Eventually, when the current generation dies off or becomes covered by a government plan there will no longer be anyone covered by private insurance.

Of course, long before that happens private insurance companies will become insolvent because they cannot obtain new customers.

Welcome to the new slavery!

Update: On page 118 it is illegal for an employer who currently offers a health insurance plan to "induce" individuals to switch to the government plan. In other words, employers have to keep paying despite taxes going for alternative plans. This is to prevent the "dumping" phenomenon experienced by the states where employers simply stopped offering health insurance as a benefit. Another way in which the liberals are attempting make "the rich" pay for health insurance for others. The reality of the situation: many employers will simply dump health insurance coverage as soon as this bill passes in order to avoid being penalized when the law takes effect. Better 8% than 8% plus penalties!

Update 2: On page 283 profits for any plan working via the government would be limited to 15%, with higher profits being rebated. Dang, can we get automatic tax refunds, too?

Update 3: "No doc loans" come to health care! Page 320 states that no one will be made to provide documentation to prove their status for "low income" benefits. Yes, that means illegal aliens will not be made to prove they are citizens.
‘‘(iii) CERTIFICATION OF INCOME AND
14 RESOURCES.—For purposes of applying
15 this section—
16 ‘‘(I) an individual shall be per
17 mitted to apply on the basis of self
18 certification of income and resources;
19 and
20 ‘‘(II) matters attested to in the
21 application shall be subject to appro
22 priate methods of verification without
23 the need of the individual to provide
24 additional documentation, except in
1 extraordinary situations as determined
2 by the Commissioner.’’.
Oh, and we're on the "honor system" for special benefits. People continue to receive them until they decide to inform the government that they no longer qualify. (!)

Update 4: Insurance providers will be judged on whether they are "fair" to everyone, including whether they are providing free interpreters in medical service facilities for people who do not speak English.

Update 5: If any provider is found to be "lacking diversity" (in terms of Title XVIII, XIX, or XXI) they will be prohibited from enrolling new people. This, of course, is just one of many ways in which the bureaucrats will shut down "uncooperative" health insurance providers: by claiming they aren't insuring "enough" women, children or elderly people.

Remember when the government said everyone should own a home?
Yeah, I'm thinking this plan to force everyone to have health insurance is going to end the same way.
WASHINGTON – House Democrats are crafting a plan that would require all Americans to carry health insurance and would help families making less than $88,000 pay the premiums. Employers, too, would have to help foot the bill.

I can just see it now: The Community Reinsurance Act—doing to health insurance what we did to housing!

"SCHIP is senseless"
Great analysis from CATO on the SCHIP scam. Arm yourself to do battle with the MSM when they call you heartless monsters who want to kill children!
"SCHIP is senseless. Like its much larger sibling, Medicaid, the program forces taxpayers to send their money to Washington so that Congress can send it back to state governments with strings attached. ...SCHIP's record shows that Washington has no special wisdom that gives it the right to dictate how the states provide medical care to the needy."

Cato scholar Michael F. Cannon

This, however, is how American politics works. First politicians convince you that sending your money to Washington is a good idea (usually because someone else "has to send more") and then they bribe you with your own money by promising to send back a few more pennies on the dollar than "the other guys".

Alternatives to SCHIP expansion exist!

Those who fail at arithmetic: doomed!
As the saying goes, those who fail at arithmetic are doomed.

That explains so much about Democrat policies...and the MSM reports about government.

Take, for example, the breathless article that pretends to reveal a conflicting account about the affects of President Bush's plan to make health care insurance tax deductible.
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush's health insurance proposals would cost taxpayers $526 billion through 2017, according to a preliminary estimate from Congress' Joint Committee on Taxation.

One Democratic lawmaker jumped on the figure Tuesday to describe the proposal as a tax increase. The projection, which comes from the committee's nonpartisan staff, is stunningly different from the administration's estimates as well as those from other independent analysts.

Shocking!

Well, actually, not so much.

Let's take a look at the main claim: the changes will "cost" taxpayers $526 billion through 2017. Hmmm, if it "costs" taxpayers, that would mean taxpayers are paying more, right? Something much different that what President Bush has been telling people, right?

Except that further down we see that what Democrats claim is not going to happen, at least not the way they are telling it.
The changes wouldn't go into effect until fiscal year 2009. At first, the changes would result in less money coming into the Treasury.

Okay, that doesn't sound like a tax increase to me.

But then estimates change.
But that would change beginning in 2011, according to the staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation. By 2017, the change would increase revenues by $148 billion for that year.

Okay, so it would first result in tax savings and then (presumably as incomes increased) people would start paying more in taxes as the deductions would be worth relatively less each year. At least that part makes sense (if the assumption is correct).

So how is this different from the administration's summary?
John Sheils and Randy Haught of the Lewin Group, a consulting firm, recently estimated that the president's health insurance plan would reduce taxes by $108.5 billion through 2017.

Note that this estimate also ends in 2017. In other words, at a point in which the net change would move from positive to negative.

Sounds like a difference of opinion about how fast incomes will increase and whether or not the deductions will be indexed to inflation and not a major conspiracy to defraud anyone. Indeed, the difference between the two estimates is only $70.5 billion a year. This when government revenues will average about three trillion dollars a year. That's about two tenths of a percent of the budget.

We are not talking major changes here. As the Bush administration claimed, it is close to "revenue neutral" as one can get for estimates that are a decade out...and do not factor in any recessions in the mean time.

So there is no major conspiracy here. No evil plot to increase your taxes. Nothing but typical Washington guessing games with the budget. But then the MSM and Democrats expect everyone to be as bad at math as they are.
