Mexicans fear that rising number of Americans in Mexico will ruin their way of life.
Not everyone is rolling out the welcome mat to Americans. Many Mexicans complain about the rapid growth of the American population in their neighborhoods, the threat they see to Mexican culture and language, and the possible drain on Mexico's inexpensive health care.
In San Miguel de Allende, the group Basta Ya is protesting the erosion of the language and the rising cost of living generated by the infusion of dollars into the local economy.
"They think Mexico, especially San Miguel de Allende, is an extension of their country," group member Arturo Morales Tirado said of the Americans who call San Miguel home. "It's not and won't be, no way."
Others are fuming over what they consider to be the privatization of beach land. Under Mexican law, beaches are federal land and are open to the public. Gosh, I'm all broken up about this!

This story reminds me of environmentalist attempts to tell people where and how to live.
MOSCOW (Reuters) - California will no longer exist on the Russian map.
Russia's north-western region of Nizhny Novgorod has decided to eliminate the tiny village of California due to the lack of inhabitants, Itar-Tass news agency reported on Thursday.
The village was set up in the 19th century by a Russian landowner as a snub to the government for selling Alaska to the United States in 1867, Tass said.
The once vibrant village has been in decline since the Soviet collapse, with the last of its residents leaving in 2000 to seek better lives elsewhere.
It will now officially cease to exist as a geographical unit but it was unclear if its buildings, including a school, would also be destroyed.
Thousands of villages, abandoned by people moving to cities, are scattered across Russia, many in ruins but some frozen in time, their wooden huts unchanged for decades. The Soviets forced people to live in remote locations so they could serve as easy sources of labor for whatever Soviet work project was nearby. Environmentalists would have us live the same way: cooped up into areas deemed "sustainable" which in reality are merely handy ways of keeping control of the population.
Now that Russians are no longer being forced to live in any one place they move where they choose. I'm sure the Communists...err...environmentalists in Russia are devastated by this development.
Yeah, freedom sure sucks, doesn't it? ;)

Well, besides socialism, that is.
Demographics. Oh, and take note how the economy has placed wages well above where the government decides that a "minimum" should be. That's why you don't want the government setting your wages!
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The owner of a fast food joint in Montana's booming oil patch found himself outsourcing the drive-thru window to a Texas telemarketing firm, not because it's cheaper but because he can't find workers.
Record low unemployment across parts of the West has created tough working conditions for business owners, who in places are being forced to boost wages or be creative to fill their jobs.
John Francis, who owns the McDonald's in Sidney, Mont., said he tried advertising in the local newspaper and even offered up to $10 an hour to compete with higher-paying oil field jobs. Yet the only calls were from other business owners upset they would have to raise wages, too. Of course, Francis' current employees also wanted a pay hike. Needless to say things aren't going to improve going forward without some radical changes.

Apparently there are too few Russians out there! The Russian government has designated September 12th as "get jiggy with it day". (Okay, that's not the official name, but it sounds so much better.)
Russians get the day off to relax and think of Mother Russia. Err, maybe a MILF then?
In any case the hoped-for result is an explosion of babies in nine months. Hmmm, maybe they should have given people the day off according to a schedule so all the new babies don't show up at once?
I'd say we need a program like that in the states but we already have our "secure border" in the south. :P
Still, I see nothing wrong with getting jiggy with it on September 12th to share this burden with our Russian friends. Why should they have all the fun do all the work?
Note: for all those Russian women out there who are looking at an empty schedule on September 12th, give me a call just create an account on MySpace. You'll have lots of attention in no time at all. (Quality of attention is not guaranteed, subject to change at any time without notice, void where prohibited.)

There is no telling how many times we will have to kill this (or a similar) bill.
Politicians in Washington are once again mistaking doing "something" for doing what is right.
Write your representatives in Congress and tell them you want:
- Secure borders. That means a fence between us and Mexico. Secure borders must be the first thing accomplished.
- Deportation of illegal immigrants with (other) criminal records. Repeat offenders do no make good citizens.
- Putting the other illegal immigrants at the back of the line, whether in terms of time or money. They should not be rewarded for their lawbreaking.
- Prohibit the "backdating" of government benefits for illegal immigrants. They should never collect a dime in benefits until they are here legally and then only measuring the time they have been legal.
- No voting rights for non-citizens, no counting them in the census for purposes of representation, taxation or other government services.
- Pay as you go: non-citizens must pay their fair share of health care and education costs.
- No special process for granting illegal immigrants citizenship or the rights of citizens.
- Fines for employing illegal immigrants who do not register with the government; deportation for illegal immigrants who do not register with the government. Immigrants who register must follow the proper procedures for obtaining work permits.
- Tax capital transfers from the US to other countries made by illegal immigrants.
- A definite, reasonable time frame for allowing illegal immigrants to register. After that they face immediate deportation.
- Any priority status developed for processing illegal immigrants can only be granted to those who can speak English or who have an immediate family member (spouse, child, parent, sibling) who can speak English.
These points are not unreasonable. They are not harsh. They reinforce the laws of our nation and promote respect for our laws and society.
Send this list to Congress! Tell them they'll never see another dime or another vote from you until these things have been passed into law.

There are a lot of reasons why some US companies are in the state they are now regarding retirement benefits and health care costs.
DETROIT (AP) — General Motors Corp. will try to reduce its staggering employee and retiree health care liabilities in upcoming contract talks with the United Auto Workers, according to a government regulatory filing Thursday. There is nothing unique about GM. It made the same deals during WWII and after that most other companies did: generous future benefits offered to employees to get them to come work and stay once they were there.
It seemed like a deal too good to be true. Current employees would have their benefits paid by the work of future employees. No one considered the possibility that there would be fewer future workers.
The government made the same kind of deal with everyone, not just employees. It's called Social Security and it, too was a deal that was too good to be true.
I'm sure we have nothing to worry about, though. Democrats have been telling us for 30 years that we don't need to change the program, that everything is just fine. I trust them, don't you? I mean it's not like they have a completely separate retirement and health care plan, is it?
What's, that...they do have a completely separate plan?
Oh, dear.

In my custom LJ layout I have the Census Bureau population counter at the top of the page. The reason is that demographics is one of the most powerful influences on political, economic and social policy in this country. You cannot understand most of the problems we face as a society or realize what programs are likely to succeed or fail if you do not understand the demographics of this country.
The 300 million people threshold has a lot of implications, but for now I will just join everyone else celebrating this milestone. Current Mood : impressed Tags : demographics Location : Home

I'm not even talking in terms of Congressional seats, but simply of the party that represents more Americans.
Haven't they noticed the shift over the past twenty years? Why haven't they conducted a sanity check? Just search on "Democrat switches party" in a search engine and review the thousands of entries that appear from the past twenty years. Why did they leave?
Are there any Democrats left who can answer that? Aside from Zell Miller, that is. Current Mood : curious Tags : democrats, demographics, politics
