When the facts don't fit the theory
Of course I'm talking about the Global Warming Hoax and the Church of Climate Change.

People who value real science are of course willing to ask questions when the facts don't fit the theory.
Where is the test of the hypothesis that sulfates are indeed responsible for the lack of warming? In this paper, it's simply "modeled-in" as it fits the data well. That's correlation, not causation.

There is very little exchange of air between the northern and southern hemispheres, and basic climate science shows that most sulfates from China will rain out before they get across the thermal equator. In fact, there is a great deal of literature out there published by luminaries like the Department of Energy's Ben Santer and NASA's James Hansen claiming relative cooling of the northern hemisphere from sulfates, compared to the southern.

So, if it is indeed sulfates cooling the warming, given that there is no net change in global temperature, then the northern hemisphere should be cooling since 1998 (the first year in Kaufmann's paper) while the southern warms. Here are the sad facts:

The opposite is occurring. Why this test was not performed eludes me. Perhaps that is because it provides yet another piece of evidence supporting the hypothesis that we have simply overstated the sensitivity of surface temperature to changes in carbon dioxide.

It's been 30 years since the alarmists first started claiming the sky was falling and global warming would doom us all.

None of their predictions have come true and the skeptic stance that natural variation and the influence of the sun were much more realistic explanations of observed changes in climate has been borne out.

Bank failures and regulation
Cato study finds no evidence that regulation lessens bank failures.

This result is consistent with the moral hazard argument that non-risk-rated deposit insurance induces banks toward excessive risk taking and therefore results in more bank failures. The moral hazard hypothesis is also supported by the empirical results of Richard Grossman (1992). [20] The fact that Canada had no bank failures and runs at all during the period under study seems to suggest that regulations are necessary and desirable to stabilize a banking system. This policy recommendation, however, should be made with qualifications. First, in the statistical sense, our empirical results show that free banking is not more prone to bank failures than regulated banking. Moreover, the finding that the American banking system had a higher bank failure rate than the Canadian system, though both were regulated, is consistent with Benston's allegation that the U.S. regulatory authorities were not adequate in preventing bank failures. That the mere existence of regulations does not necessarily stabilize the banking industry is also supported by the Hong Kong experience.

And the money quote:
If a free banking system is not more prone to bank failures than other banking systems, it can be an effective alternative to banking reform. Regulatory authorities, threfore, should not assume that more regulations naturally translate into fewer bank failures.

You won't hear that from the rabid left which lusts for the blood of everyone who makes more money than they do.

The added bonus of a free(er) market is that overpaid executives (i.e., those who fail to perform) will lose their job as a natural consequence of their companies going bankrupt or being bought out by competitors.

US has long history of waging "wrong" wars?
This is where I depart from CATO's otherwise decent analysis.

In their zeal to show that all foreign wars are "wrong" they come up with incredible stretches that defy logic and reason, such as claiming the United States caused the Soviet Empire to appear and that fighting Nazi Germany was wrong because it "enabled" the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.

Come on, is anyone going to take the anti-war side seriously when they spout nonsense like that?

In addition, some claims are simply outright lies, such as this one:
By entering World War I on the side of France and Great Britain, Wilson enabled them to win a decisive victory and impose vindictive surrender terms on Germany.

Wilson, for all his faults, argued against vindictive terms against Germany and the United States ended up financing the German war debt to France and England.

Indeed, anyone who argues with logical fallacies such as this:
Even though the United States defeated Hitler in World War II, within five years more people lived under totalitarian regimes than before the war, as communists came to power in Eastern Europe and China. Millions ended up exchanging a Nazi tyranny for a communist tyranny.

needs to spend more time reading books than writing them.

I'm sure Lew Rockwell loves this guy!

The reason the United States emerged as a super-power after WWII was because the war was fought all over the globe except for the western hemmisphere. The United States was virtually untouched by the war, except for the human toll, of course. While the rest of the world tried to emerge from almost total devestation, the United States was able to concentrate on expanding businesses and services to supply the rest of the world with finished products.

Fighting wars on the soil of your enemies is always better than waiting for your enemies to arrive here. Fighting the terrorists on the streets of the United States would take a far greater toll than we have currently paid, and it would be our civilians dying by the score from homicide bombers.

Indeed, the bloodiest war we have waged was the one we did fight on U.S. soil: the Civil War. How is that for no "foreign" wars? How about no wars on American soil?!

"The Founding Fathers knew a government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose."
