Tension in the Clinton clan
As soon as I heard about Bill's mission I knew that Hillary was not going to be pleased.
KINSHASA, Congo – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's temper flared on Monday when a Congolese university student asked for her husband's thinking on an international matter.

"My husband is not secretary of state. I am," an obviously annoyed Clinton replied sharply.

She's realizing that Obama is successfully marginalizing her. I predict a post-mid-term election resignation!

Why you can't trust Obama's tax cut promises
Remember the "middle class tax cut" that helped get Clinton elected? He didn't!
President-elect Bill Clinton said Thursday that the plan was never a major theme in his race for the White House.

Of course not, it was one of his "temporary" promises, like that "24 hour" promise he used in Arkansas.

Obama is going to do the same thing, I promise you.

How the subprime mess started
You knew it would end up back with Clinton, didn't you?
Since HUD became their regulator in 1992, Fannie and Freddie each year are supposed to buy a portion of "affordable" mortgages made to underserved borrowers. Every four years, HUD reviews the goals to adapt to market changes.

In 1995, President Bill Clinton's HUD agreed to let Fannie and Freddie get affordable-housing credit for buying subprime securities that included loans to low-income borrowers. The idea was that subprime lending benefited many borrowers who did not qualify for conventional loans. HUD expected that Freddie and Fannie would impose their high lending standards on subprime lenders.

So...Barack...where has your Congress been in terms of oversight? Why aren't you insisting that Clinton be made to explain what he was thinking when he did this?

Anyone?

Anyone?

Bueller?

We already know McCain tried to do something about it.

Update: More bragging by Clinton:
Strengthened the Community Reinvestment Act. In 1995, the Administration updated the Community Reinvestment Act regulations to focus on banks’ actual service delivery, rather than on compliance efforts. From 1993 to 1998, lenders subject to the law increased mortgage lending to low- and moderate-income families by 80 percent—more than twice the rate they increased mortgage lending to other income groups.

Because favoring quotas over compliance is such a great idea!

Update 2: President Bush trying to fix HUD.
Section 8, the federal program created in 1975 to provide low-income families with the opportunity to rent safe and affordable housing in the private market, is broken. The Department of Housing and Urban Development has a plan to fix it. If Congress passes the flexible voucher program we have proposed, President Bush and I are convinced that we can better serve the two million families who depend on Section 8 -- and help even more Americans find affordable housing in the process.

Over three decades, Section 8 has grown into an overly prescriptive and unwieldy program. It has separate rules for more than a dozen different types of housing vouchers, along with 120 pages of regulations. Costs have spiraled out of control, without a corresponding gain in benefits.

Five years ago, Section 8 consumed 36 percent of HUD's budget; today, it absorbs more than half. In the past four years, the financing needed for the program has increased by 41 percent, to $20 billion a year. This growth rate is not sustainable, and it has already begun eating away at other essential HUD programs.

Obviously this is a "market" failure.

Bill Clinton armed and trained al Qaeda?
A news agency in Belgrade is reporting that a new book offers the theory that Bill Clinton, while President, worked with Iran to arm and train al Qaeda as a force to combat the Serbs in Bosnia.
Schindler, author of a book on terrorism, told CNN Al-Qaeda members were invited to Bosnia by that country’s leadership, where they set up training camps operational from 1992 until 1995.

He claims Osama Bin Laden exploited the war in Bosnia for his own interests, and says there was “a worrying level of support” for the Mujahedin on the part of the U.S. administration of that time.

RFE reported that the book looks into the way in which the Clinton administration cooperated with Iran to arm the Mujahedin fighting in Bosnia, including Al-Qaeda, with weapons and equipment worth millions of dollars.

Interesting theory.

The book:

About the book:
The Bosnian conflict of 1992 to 1995 has been largely misrepresented in the West . . . until now. In Unholy Terror, John R. Schindler—professor of strategy at the Naval War College and former National Security Agency analyst and counterintelligence officer—reappraises the war in Bosnia, illuminating its pivotal role in the development of radical Islamic terrorism.

The long hidden truth is that Bosnia played the same role for al-Qa’ida in the 1990s that Afghanistan did in the 1980s, providing a battleground where mujahidin could learn to wage holy war. Schindler exposes how Osama bin Laden exploited the Bosnian conflict for his own ends and the disturbing level of support the U.S. government gave to the Bosnian mujahidin—just as had been done with the Afghan mujahidin. Repeating the mistakes of Afghanistan contributed to blowback of epic proportions: Khalid Sheikh Muhammad (the mastermind of 9/11) and two of the 9/11 hijacker pilots were veterans of the Bosnian jihad.

Makes you wonder just what was in all those documents Sandy Berger stole, doesn't it? And why is it that he isn't in jail for it.... And why Jamie Gorelick create that wall. And why she was put on the 9-11 Commission where she could cover everything up....

Democrat lies about US attorneys and who fires them and why they do it
Democrats have been claiming that it was fine and dandy for Clinton to fire all 93 US attorneys because (defying logic) "that's not political", when in fact that is the definition of political.

They also claim that Reagan and Carter "did the same thing".

Um, no, they didn't. The WSJ at the time called Clinton's (Reno's) action unprecedented and I find no record of Reagan firing all 93 attorneys (and you just know the landscape would be littered with news articles calling him a fascist if he had done so). Indeed what the record shows is that after two years (!) he had replaced 89 of them.

In fact neither Carter nor Reagan (nor Bush '41) ever completely replaced the entirety of sitting US attorneys. There were also important outstanding investigations going on at the time, such at the investigation into Dan Rostenkowski's criminal activities where an immediate removal of the US attorney in charge clearly "appeared" to be political. Remember that old Democrat whine about even the appearance of being improper being wrong?

Even more amusing is that if "everyone did it" was an excuse for Clinton then it would also be an excuse for Bush. (!)

Which leads us to the question: why are Democrats telling so many lies about the firing of US attorneys?

It is once again an attempt by Democrats to prevent Republicans from acting within the law by accusing them of dark, sinister motives. Just like when Republicans try to campaign in the South (because they want to attract racists, of course) or defend ethics (because they are controlled by the extreme religious right).

Those lies won't stand. Not here.

The President can hire and fire at will throughout his terms in office. To claim otherwise is at best ignorant and at worst deliberately deceptive.

All 93? You mean like Clinton and Reno did?
Gosh, that would be disruptive, wouldn't it?
WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House considered firing all 93 federal prosecutors at the start of President Bush's second term, but yielded to Justice Department objections and eventually agreed to a smaller list of dismissals compiled by Justice officials, a spokeswoman said Monday.

Try telling that to Congress!

Instead they settle on about a half a dozen under-performing prosecutors...and the Democrats act like they fired all 93 prosecutors like Reno and Clinton did they hate President Bush and will oppose anything he does.

Oliver North on Clinton's "YEEARGH" moment
Olive North points out that Bill Clinton admitted to breaking several laws.
Ordering the assassination of a foreign national is arguably more important than lying about a tryst with an intern in the Oval Office. So where is the "shock and awe" from human rights standard bearers who still complain about the so-called abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay? Do they not care that Mr. Clinton ordered an assassination?

What was that about an imperial presidency that considers itself above the law?

More on Clinton's YEARGH! moment
Chris Wallace is commenting on Fox News that Clinton remained angry throughout the interview and threatened to fire anyone who ever put him in that kind of position again. Wallace said that Clinton's handler was poking the producer in the arm throughout the exchange saying "end this interview now!"

Wallace said that he asked what he thought was a very non-confrontational question (it was the third question of the interview) and Clinton just "went off" and started talking about right-wing hit jobs and conspiracy theories.

Bill Clinton hops on the faith-based science movement:
Clinton Links GOP Policies to More Storms

As Tropical Storm Alberto threatened to strengthen into the ninth hurricane in 22 months to affect Florida, former President Clinton predicted Monday that Republican environmental policies will lead to more severe storms.

More doom and gloom, "we'll all be living a hell on Earth if Republicans win" nonsense.

Perhaps the Republicans can oppose them with "vote for us or you'll really go to hell" strategy.

I think I need to start posting this daily!
1-101. Pursuant to Section 102(a)(1) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1802(a)), the Attorney General is authorized to approve electronic surveillance to acquire foreign intelligence information without a court order, but only if the Attorney General makes the certifications required by that Section.

This is part of an Executive Order that has been issued by every President since Carter that expressly allows for spying against foreign agents without court orders.

This concept has been upheld numerous times in court, including the FISA court.

The Democrats are really striking out on this issue. (Don't even try to claim the AG hasn't been certifying these wiretaps!)

Still more on the "unprecedented" spying
First of all, the President had/has the authority to do what he has been doing.
President Bush's post-Sept. 11, 2001, authorization to the National Security Agency to carry out electronic surveillance into private phone calls and e-mails is consistent with court decisions and with the positions of the Justice Department under prior presidents.

...

In the Supreme Court's 1972 Keith decision holding that the president does not have inherent authority to order wiretapping without warrants to combat domestic threats, the court said explicitly that it was not questioning the president's authority to take such action in response to threats from abroad.

Four federal courts of appeal subsequently faced the issue squarely and held that the president has inherent authority to authorize wiretapping for foreign intelligence purposes without judicial warrant.

In the most recent judicial statement on the issue, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review, composed of three federal appellate court judges, said in 2002 that "All the ... courts to have decided the issue held that the president did have inherent authority to conduct warrantless searches to obtain foreign intelligence ... We take for granted that the president does have that authority."
Chicago Tribune

And again, President Bush's predecessors waged their own little campaign of warrantless searches against Americans.
In a little-remembered debate from 1994, the Clinton administration argued that the president has "inherent authority" to order physical searches — including break-ins at the homes of U.S. citizens — for foreign intelligence purposes without any warrant or permission from any outside body. Even after the administration ultimately agreed with Congress's decision to place the authority to pre-approve such searches in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court, President Clinton still maintained that he had sufficient authority to order such searches on his own.

"The Department of Justice believes, and the case law supports, that the president has inherent authority to conduct warrantless physical searches for foreign intelligence purposes," Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee on July 14, 1994, "and that the President may, as has been done, delegate this authority to the Attorney General."

"It is important to understand," Gorelick continued, "that the rules and methodology for criminal searches are inconsistent with the collection of foreign intelligence and would unduly frustrate the president in carrying out his foreign intelligence responsibilities."

...

The debate over warrantless searches came up after the case of CIA spy Aldrich Ames. Authorities had searched Ames's house without a warrant, and the Justice Department feared that Ames's lawyers would challenge the search in court.
National Review

That would be Jamie "I'm going to create a wall between domestic and foreign intelligence" Gorelick.

Just a reminder: Clinton used warrantless searches to spy on Americans; Bush is using them to spy on terrorists. Any questions?

A few more things about FISA, spying and Presidential power
It does not apply to terrorists, illegal aliens, etc. inside the United States!
"United States person" means a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence (as defined in section 1101 (a)(20) of title 8), an unincorporated association a substantial number of members of which are citizens of the United States or aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or a corporation which is incorporated in the United States, but does not include a corporation or an association which is a foreign power, as defined in subsection (a)(1), (2), or (3) of this section.

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode50/usc_sec_50_00001801----000-.html

And the President is permitted by FISA to watch people without court orders when above "non US persons" are involved:

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode50/usc_sec_50_00001802----000-.html

An Executive Order was issued directing the Attorney General to conduct just this kind of operation:
By the authority vested in me as President by Sections 102 and
104 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C.
1802 and 1804), in order to provide as set forth in that Act (this
chapter) for the authorization of electronic surveillance for
foreign intelligence purposes, it is hereby ordered as follows:

1-101. Pursuant to Section 102(a)(1) of the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1802(a)), the Attorney General
is authorized to approve electronic surveillance to acquire foreign
intelligence information without a court order, but only if the
Attorney General makes the certifications required by that Section.

1-102. Pursuant to Section 102(b) of the Foreign Intelligence Act
of 1978 (50 U.S.C. 1802(b)), the Attorney General is authorized to
approve applications to the court having jurisdiction under Section
103 of that Act (50 U.S.C. 1803) to obtain orders for electronic
surveillance for the purpose of obtaining foreign intelligence
information.

The President who issued that XO? Jimmy Carter.

Now, if you want a President who did spy on Americans then you want Bill Clinton:
During the 1990's under President Clinton, the National Security Agency monitored millions of private phone calls placed by U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries under a super secret program code-named Echelon.

The Democrats really need to decide whose side they are on in this war and stop being such lying hypocrites.

Okay, so it was President Clinton, I'm sure the Democrats will still be up in arms, right?

You see, President Clinton authorized the warrantless search of Aldrich Ames' home and belongings once it was discovered that he was spying against us.

A series of liberal events
Unfortunate, to be sure.

  1. Denise Rich, "divorced" from convicted criminal (and fugitive at large) Marc Rich, donates tens of thousands of dollars to Hillary Clinton's political campaign and over a million dollars in total contributions to various Democrat campaigns.
The government watchdog group Judicial Watch accused Denise Rich of making excessive donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2000 campaign totaling at least $70,000 and of giving her furniture worth $7,375 in return for the president's pardon of Marc Rich.

  2. Bill Clinton pardons Marc Rich.
Rich and his partner, Pincus Green, were indicted for their involvement in tax evasion and commodities fraud cases in 1983. They never returned to the United States to face trial.

  3. Marc Rich brokers illegal deals between Saddam Hussein and various European and UN officials.
"Without that kind of middleman, the system would not work because the major oil companies did not want to deal with Iraq because there was a mandated kickback," said human rights investigator John Fawcett.

  4. Saddam uses oil-for-food money obtained via Rich and others to buy weapons and maintain his totalitarian rule. Implicated in the scandal include figures lobbying against the liberation of Iraq and Kofi Annan's son.
The report notes that the start of Oil-for-Food, in 1996, marked the revival of Saddam's post-Gulf War fortunes. His regime amassed some $11 billion in illicit funds between the end of the Gulf War in 1991, and his overthrow by the U.S.-led Coalition in 2003. Most of that money flowed in from 1996-2003, during the era of Oil-for-Food.

  5. Saddam relies on bribed officials to protect him from American enforcement of Gulf War treaty and UN resolutions, including the French government which strongly opposed the liberation of Iraq.
By 2001, Saddam was able to thwart many of the constraints sanctions were meant to impose on his regime. His strategy, notes the Duelfer report, succeeded "to the point where sitting members of the Security Council were actively violating resolutions passed by the Security Council."

Saddam Hussein used a U.N. humanitarian program to pay $1.78 billion to French government officials, businessmen and journalists in a bid to have sanctions removed and U.S. policies opposed, according to a CIA report made public yesterday.

  6. Saddam funds terrorists with oil-for-food money, including al Qaeda operatives.
It has long been established that Saddam paid bounties of $15,000 to $25,000 to the Palestinian families of the murderers. Hyde's committee will reveal at the hearing that some of the reward money was deposited from illegal profits Saddam made by demanding 10 percent kickbacks on all the contracts of companies that did business with the U.N.'s Oil-for-Food program.

The Sept. 11 Commission has shown a tracery of contacts between Saddam and Al Qaeda that continued after billions of Oil-for-Food dollars began pouring into Saddam's coffers and Usama bin Laden declared his infamous war on the U.S.

Now, buried in some of the United Nation's own confidential documents, clues can be seen that underscore the possibility of just such a Saddam-Al Qaeda link — clues leading to a locked door in this Swiss lakeside resort.

  7. Saddam may yet be tied to 9-11.
In what may be the most shocking news to emerge from the already stunning Oil for Food scandal, investigators say that Saddam Hussein bankrolled key al Qaida players in the late 1990s - a period of time when the terror group was planning the 9/11 attacks and the Iraqi dictator was ripping off billions from the U.N. program.

"Saddam had given $300,000 in cash to Ayman Al Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's number two man, in the spring of 1998," the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes told WABC Radio's Monica Crowley.

"It's likely that Saddam was giving some of his [Oil for Food] money to al Qaida."

In an eerie coincidence, an October 2001 estimate by the Justice Department put the entire cost of the 9/11 operation at $300,000.

Without people like Marc and Denise Rich, Bill Clinton and Saddam Hussein over 4000 Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis would still be alive.
