Stupid Republicans, criminal Democrats
Unfortunately this kind of story is all too common, especially from the "most ethical administration in history".
WASHINGTON (AP) - Former national security adviser Sandy Berger removed classified documents from the National Archives in 2003 and hid them under a construction trailer, the Archives inspector general reported Wednesday.

The report was issued more than a year after Berger pleaded guilty and received a criminal sentence for removal of the documents.

Inspector General Paul Brachfeld reported that when Berger was confronted by Archives officials about the missing documents, he said it was possible he threw them in his office trash.

Republicans: stupid for letting Berger get away with a slap on the wrist. Democrats: criminal for sponsoring and condoning this behavior because Berger is "one of theirs".

Sandy Berger should be in jail. He stole and destroyed information concerning Osama Bin Laden and 9-11. Sadly, his ilk were part of the 9-11 commission which allegedly was looking into what happened and how to prevent future attacks. Instead it was on giant cover-your-ass operation where people like Sandy Berger scrubbed their complicity in the actions that led up to 9-11.

Holy cow, it is about time!
Apparently some Republicans in Congress have realized that no one likes a spineless doormat.
WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans on Wednesday sought a congressional investigation into the improper handling of classified documents by President Clinton's national security adviser.

The aide, Sandy Berger, admitted last year that he deliberately took classified documents from the National Archives in 2003 and destroyed some of them at his office. He pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of unauthorized removal and retention of classified material and was fined $50,000.

Better late than never!
During Berger's sentencing hearing, lawyer Lanny Breuer characterized Berger as eager to get the facts of the Sept. 11 attacks right when he took the material, which contained information relating to terrorist threats in the United States during the 2000 millennium celebration.

One wonders what was in those documents relating to al Qaeda and 9-11 that Berger was so "eager" to...destroy.

Berger should already be serving a very long jail sentence for those crimes. I'd say one year per document stolen and five years for every document destroyed ought to do it!

Ashcroft: 9-11 Commission a joke
Well, duh!
WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Former Attorney General John Ashcroft this week became the only Cabinet-level Bush official to attack the Sept. 11 Commission, writing in his memoirs it "seemed obsessed with trying to lay the blame for the terrorist attacks at the feet of the Bush administration, while virtually absolving the previous administration of responsibility."

I have been saying that ever since the people most responsible for the intelligence breakdowns were appointed to the commission.

Able was I, ere I saw Congress
The Able Danger hearings are on again, apparently.
WASHINGTON — The Defense Department on Friday reversed its earlier decision to bar key witnesses from testifying about just how much information the U.S. government had on the Sept. 11 hijackers before they led the attacks that killed 3,000 people.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has therefore scheduled a second hearing for next week on the formerly secret Pentagon intelligence unit called "Able Danger".

Former members of Able Danger say the group identified Sept. 11 hijackers, including Mohamed Atta, more than a year before the attacks. Although those Able Danger analysts say they told the Sept. 11 commission about their findings, former members of the panel have so far dismissed the claim.

Of course the panel dismisses the claims. They're only there to cover their own asses.

Clinton administration ordered Atta papers destroyed
Gosh, do you think Berger was making sure everything was cleaned up before the 9-11 Commission could find the truth an easy excuse?
WASHINGTON (AP) - A Pentagon employee was ordered to destroy documents that identified Mohamed Atta as a terrorist two years before the 2001 attacks, a congressman said Thursday.

The employee is prepared to testify next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee and was expected to name the person who ordered him to destroy the large volume of documents, said Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa.

Weldon declined to name the employee, citing confidentiality matters. Weldon described the documents as "2.5 terabytes" - as much as one-fourth of all the printed materials in the Library of Congress, he added.

Watch C-Span next Wednesday at 10AM to see for yourself!

How soon until everyone agrees that the 9-11 Commission was a joke?

Sandy Berger: Guilty
Sandy Berger fined $50,000 for stealing classified documents related to 9-11 from the National Archives.
"The court finds the fine is inadequate because it doesn't reflect the seriousness of the offense," Judge Robinson said in handing down the sentence. She also ordered Mr. Berger to surrender his access to classified government materials for three years, perform 100 hours of community service and serve two years' probation.

Do you think any of the documents were related to Able-Danger or Gorelick's "wall"?

Yeah, so do I.

Able Danger won't go away
I said from the start that the 9-11 commission was nothing more than a CYA maneuver. The commission is acting shocked (shocked, they say) that Able Danger didn't see the light of day in their committee.

Now a third person has come forward to confirm the Able Danger story.
J.D. Smith, a defense contractor who claims he worked on the technical side of the unit, code-named "Able Danger", told reporters Friday that he helped gather open-source information, reported on government spending and helped generate charts associated with the unit's work. Able Danger was set up in the 1990s to track Al Qaeda activity worldwide.

If you want the truth about what our government knew prior to 9-11, don't ask the government to "look into it"!

9-11 Commission has a bridge to sell you
The 9-11 Commission is "shocked" (shocked, they say) to learn that defense intelligence agents knew about Mohamed Atta and other 9-11 terrorists months and even years before the event happened.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Members of the Sept. 11 commission want to know whether defense intelligence officials knew four of the hijackers were part of an al-Qaida cell but failed to tell law enforcement.

Lee Hamilton, co-chairman of the now-disbanded commission, said Tuesday that members of the panel could issue a statement by the end of the week after reviewing claims that officials had identified ringleader Mohamed Atta and three other hijackers.

"The 9/11 commission did not learn of any U.S. government knowledge prior to 9/11 of surveillance of Mohamed Atta or of his cell," said Hamilton, a former Democratic congressman from Indiana. "Had we learned of it, obviously it would've been a major focus of our investigation."

Yeah, sure it would have been! Just like Jamie Gorelick's wall against information sharing was a major focus. Not!

The President knew!
In the weeks and months following 9-11 the left liked to chant that that the President "knew" it was going to happen. They had no evidence, of course. They simply picked up random pieces of information and insisted it meant the President had full knowledge of the impending attack.

However, when items like this appear, the left is remarkably silent.
WASHINGTON — U.S. law enforcement never received information on Sept. 11 ringleader Mohamed Atta and his possible connections to Al Qaeda, even though that information was known more than a year before the attacks that left approximately 3,000 people dead, Rep. Curt Weldon said Tuesday.

Ah yes, the problems of the Clinton era "it's a police matter" attitude. The 9-11 Commission never reviewed this information because the commission was nothing more than a collective CYA exercise. One of the members of the commission, Jamie Gorelick, was the architect of the policies that caused this kind of intelligence failure. Does anyone think she was going to allow it to see the light of day during the investigation?

The 9-11 Commission Recommendations
Let's see if I have this straight. The commission took months and months to determine that (among other things):

  • An anti-terrorist intelligence agency is needed.
  • It should be headed by a cabinet-level official.

Gee, didn't President Bush already create the Department of Homeland Security, headed by a cabinet level official?

And also:

  • Share information.

Gee, now that 9-11 commission member Jamie Gorelick is no longer forbidding the sharing of information, we can do that!

Not to mention:

  • A Congressional oversight committee.

Um, we already had one of those, and they have spent the past three years telling anyone who will listen that they didn't know anything about anything. Creating another one of those will help?

I told you not to expect anything except a cover-your-ass report from this group. Getting people who caused the problem to "analyze" a failure and then "recommend ways to fix it" is a sure way to get more of the same. The failure was in the bureaucracies, so we get the bureaucracies to look into things and their recommendation is: more bureaucracy!

Don't you just love bureaucracies?!

Democrat TV show backfires: Dr. Condi Rice administers corrective therapy!
Democrats hoped to use the TV appearance of Dr. Condi Rice to either implicate the Bush administration in 9-11 or provide some sort of televised gaffe that could be used against Bush in this year's election.

Their ploy backfired spectacularly.

Dr. Rice delivered calm, reasoned answers to the questions of the commission, and the partisan Democrats looked like they were trying to find someone (in the Bush administration) to blame for 9-11 while the Republicans looked like they were trying to find solutions to the national security concerns of Americans.

Dr. Rice emphatically contradicted Richard Clarke's allegations that there was a "plan" handed over from the Clinton administration for dealing with Osama Bin Laden. Dr. Rice refused to play the blame game, but the unstated answer to that question was if there was a plan, why wasn't it acted upon prior to January 21st, 2001?

Bob Kerrey looked particularly foolish, first taking up time to complain about President Bush's policy on Iraq, then whining that Dr. Rice was taking too long to answer his questions and "using up his time". He then went on to make statements that he didn't want Dr. Rice to address, but she did so anyway, much to the consternation of Mr. Kerrey.

Other Democrats were equally hostile to Dr. Rice, treating her more like a hostile trial witness than an administration official providing willing answers to their questions. Republicans pointed out what a farce the TV show was, noting that Dr. Rice had already answered questions in a closed session, and would do so again following the televised appearance.

Public reaction was swift and not in favor of the Democrats. Polls already showed that the public believes that the Bush administration did more to stop terrorism and 9-11 than the Clinton administration did. Dr. Rice's performance will only strengthen that belief.

It's Condi Rice Week on "The Price is Right!"
The "information gathering" committee apparently needs her to testify before cameras before her answers to them sink in! This will be a week full of spin and counter-spin.

The liberals are already prepping their news release sound-bites. They have no idea what she will say, but it will be "damaging for the Bush administration".

Apparently the same way that the fact that over 300,000 new jobs were created in March was "damaging" to President Bush!

Look for lots of silly questions from people seeking "face time" on the news shows. I hope she prefaces every answer with "as I explained to you in my previous testimony...".

Give 'em hell, Condi!
