The Beacon tracking system
Just thought you all should know that LiveJournal is participating in the Beacon tracking system.

There is an add-on for Firefox which blocks it.

You can enable "whitelist" or "blacklist" protection. Whitelist means only sites you enter will work. Blacklist means only sites you enter will be blocked. If you want to block Facebook either use whitelist (and don't enter facebook) or use blacklist and make sure this is one of your entries:

http://*.facebook.com/beacon/*

I couldn't tell from the article, does this have any effect on people like me who have no facebook account?

How do you block the Beacon stuff?

Thanks for the head's up. I installed the add-on, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it now :) What do I need to do to get it to block the tracker?

It should work automatically but you can check by going to tools->add ons and then selection the "options" button on the blocker add on.

thanks for this.

there's no use in my installing it now, as my macbook is coming via fedex as we speak :), but i'm saving this entry to install the add-on when i get my baby in the mail.

btw, any widgets or apps or accessories you think are necessary? or unnecessary, but i should dl/get anyway?
i want to get one of those silicone keyboard protector thingies, and i have no idea whether the cheap ones are just as good as the expensive ones.

Yay for keyboard condoms!

I always add the LJ addons for Firefox and the weather add ons.

If you don't have AppleCare get it...it's expensive but if you drop your laptop you'll be happy you bought it.

Should not affect paid accounts that don't do adds.

Oh good. I don't use firefox or facebook, so that's a bit of a relief.

You would think...but it showed active (but blocked) when I was using my (paid) account.

Ew. I never see ads or anything... I'll probably install it just to be safe.

That plugin didn't work for me.

In addition, even Yahoo! Mail uses beacons. The story specifically mentions how Facebook uses them, which is, indeed, quite disturbing.

Make sure this is in your blacklist:

http://*.facebook.com/beacon/*

I installed the addon, but it doesn't block beacon tracking thingy automatically. How do I actually make the addon block beacon?
reality_hammer From: [info]reality_hammer Date: April 4th, 2008 01:05 am (UTC) (Link to this entry)
tools->add ons->blocksite

Then make sure this is in your blacklist:

http://*.facebook.com/beacon/*
