Levee Failures: Another Leftist Lie
The left continues to lie about President Bush even as people are dying in the flood-ravaged areas.

Another one of their lies is that President Bush somehow held a gun to the head of people in Louisiana and forced them to stop working on the levees. Nothing could be further from the truth:
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday that a lack of funding for hurricane-protection projects around New Orleans did not contribute to the disastrous flooding that followed Hurricane Katrina.

In a telephone interview with reporters, corps officials said that although portions of the flood-protection levees remain incomplete, the levees near Lake Pontchartrain that gave way--inundating much of the city--were completed and in good condition before the hurricane.

However, they noted that the levees were designed for a Category 3 hurricane and couldn't handle the ferocious winds and raging waters from Hurricane Katrina, which was a Category 4 storm when it hit the coastline. The decision to build levees for a Category 3 hurricane was made decades ago based on a cost-benefit analysis.

Just as areas in the upper midwest built levees to protect against 100-year floods and then watched them fail under the weight of a 500 year flood, people made a decision forty years ago to build levees to withstand a category three hurricane.

Every time the left tells lies like these they harm the nation. It is no wonder they continue to lose support throughout the nation politically.

Exactly. Their lies are extremly harmful and it is frustrating they often get away with it.

Thank ye, but I don't tend to like having to use bugmenot when I post links. It gives people a reason not to read them. Plus, I don't like giving any air time to papers that use registration.

I really tire of the way they browbeat this fine and decent man. They can't wait to pin blame on him. Even Bill Clinton, when appearing with GW's father in a televised interview said that everything that can possibly be done is being done by this administration. Michael Moore, of course had to add his two cents. I don't know how anyone can like this guy.

I'm glad that someone can still understand the long-term decisions for public works projects. Even in my state of Utah, the flooding near St George this last January, was about a 100-year flood plain. And yet, people still insited on building their homes there.

Everyone is doing the best they can, and that's all that can be expected. :)
