Social Security reform: losing the propaganda war?
President Bush has been losing the propaganda war on Social Security reform. The Democrats are telling everyone that their benefits will go down under the Bush plan (a lie) and the MSM quotes them and Republicans (out of context) in such a way to suggest that private accounts will cost $2 trillion dollars to implement.

The truth is, of course, something different. The problem is how to get the truth out in such a maelstrom of negative attacks.

President Bush is currently touring the country to promote private accounts, but without a substantial press campaign of their own, the White House is at the mercy of a liberal media that does not want the truth about Social Security to get out.

President Bush is hurting himself by not clearly staking out the ground upon which he stands:
Mr. Pence said House conservatives adamantly oppose those options. "We're prepared to support government's borrowing money to get the fundamental reform of personal accounts. It's like refinancing your mortgage: You pay points upfront but save a lot more in the long run," he said.

"If we take personal retirement accounts off the table, as Democrats want, we are simply in the old tax-increase, benefits-cut trap," Mr. Pence said.

President Reagan never budged from his "SDI is not up for negotiation" stance, and President Bush should not budge from his stance that private accounts are necessary to save Social Security.

The truth will eventually come out about Social Security. If it is in the next few months then younger generations will be saved the painful experience of a failed Ponzi scheme. If it is a few years down the road, then we need to make sure everyone knows who prevented Social Security from being saved.

For some reason, the Bush administration has a hard time clarifying their stance on various topics. It doesn't help that most of the media is against them, but it'd be nice if they'd forget the "do good work in secret so that you may be rewarded openly" idea for the sake of information dissemination.

Congress lives and dies by opinion polls. President Bush has got to make the people believe in his plans if he wants to get Congress to vote for them.

President Reagan was so good at that. I wish President Bush would address the nation on TV like Reagan used to do. Twenty minutes can make all the difference.

I'm just curious - are there any policies, bills etc that Bush supports and/or implemented that you do not agree with?

I can honestly say that I did agree with him on one major issue - banning partial birth abortion. Conversely, I disagree with democrats on a lot of issues. I just never see you saying to disagree with Bush on anything, so I was just curious - hope this doesn't come across as terse.

I didn't agree with his steel tariffs.

I thought his farm subsidies were (and are) too high.

NCLB, while better than previous policies, still leaves too much power at the Federal level.

Stuff like that.

hope this doesn't come across as terse

Not at all.

What I find remarkably disingenuous is that the Dems are stating (now) that there is "no crisis" with SS, while back when Clinton was in the White House, they echoed his position that SS was in dire need of reform (and then did nothing about it!).

My question to the Dems is - which is it? In dire need of reform, or not in crisis? IMHO, it is the former.

The Democrats are in the same position the Republicans were in the late 1970s--reduced to simply opposing whatever it was the other party wanted to do.

Thankfully Ronald Reagan rescued them from that situation.

I hope the Democrats do not find a similar escape!

At their current rate of 'self-immolation', I don't think they will any time soon. That doesn't mean that "right thinking" folks can get complacent, though. We need to keep 'outing' their stupidity and flip-flopping on issues by telling the truth, and keeping the heat on them.

Fortunately for us, we have Karl Rove working 'everywhere', doing 'everything' to confuse and befuddle the Dems. (Isn't it amazing how all the Dems problems can be traced directly to one guy?)

lol

Indeed!

I remember when they said the same thing about Reagan being a "puppet".

They just can't admit that they lost to a better candidate.
