Seize the internets!
I suppose you can't blame bureaucrats for thinking like bureaucrats but the news that certain government agencies think they can "control the Internet" during times of pandemics shows that they still don't get what the Internet is.

For one thing, it is not "American". Thus the government (of America) can't control it. Talk of blocking websites (allegedly ones that "suck up bandwidth") so that "people can work from home" is just plain silly.

It is an indication of how the bureaucracy thinks, though. And one reason why I don't trust the government to implement any kind of "net neutrality" legislation. The free market can do that just fine, thank you very much.

And speaking of the free market, any company (or agency) that thinks it will need a lot of bandwidth during emergencies (real and imagined) can always reserve bandwidth from providers and establish virtual private networks to ensure secure lines of communication.

Hmmm, maybe I should start a lobbying firm to teach government officials how the Internet works?

I know it involves trucks. They drive down tubes, like in 'Diehard 3'. Then the service tunnel gets flooded, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York loses all that gold bullion.

I can't blame Senators for being morons when it comes to the Internet either. Just look at McCain trying to stop Net Neutrality.

I don't trust the government to either understand what net neutrality is or administer any sort of regulatory mechanism to ensure it. Anything they do will end up corrupted by lobbyists and political machinations.

I think the consumer will always vote (with their money) in favor of open, "neutral traffic" providers. Consumers largely drove the cell phone providers to offer unlimited plans without "roaming" fees, etc. I'd hate to see what cell phone plans would look like under a "Ma Bell" type regulatory structure.

My daughter once asked me "what does 'long distance' mean?" when watching a movie filmed in the 80s where the kids got in trouble for making long distance calls. :D I told her that was back when the government controlled the phone system.

I think your business would be short-lived as the government is intent on telling YOU what to do and not the other way around.
